In this 2 day “enrichment workshop” participants will learn and the structure and theory of ornamental design while completing an ink wash drawing and adding gold leaf details. By working from a historical example of classical ornament participants will develop a greater understanding of applied decorative design and learn how to adapt it to their own work.

On the first Saturday, the history and structure of ornamental design will be presented.  Students will then work on transferring an ornament to paper and working on the graphite underdrawing.  They will then practice wash techniques in preparation for working over graphite while preparing an ink wash study.  During the week they can work on further developing their study.

On the second Saturday, students will begin the final ink application to their ornament after having finished their preliminary studies.  They will then learn how to do the final application of gold leaf to their ornament and adding finishing touches.

WHITNEY MCCRARY received her BFA from Savannah College of Art and Design in 2005 before continuing her education at the Academy of Classical Design in North Carolina. The academy is an intensive drawing, painting, and mural program modeled after 19th century French Academies and influenced by Renaissance humanist philosophy. She later became an instructor at the academy, while also spending time studying in Paris as an artist’s assistant, and studying with classically trained artists across the United States. Her work is inspired by the quality and ideals of past masters, historical methods and materials, with an emphasis on aesthetics and imagination.
