Designing & Drawing an Icon: A Study of the St Barbara Icon

An Enrichment Workshop with Alla Kireyeva

September 22, 2018

In most iconography courses, students usually begin with transferring an image to their icon board and immediately beginning the painting process.  Rarely are they exposed to the process of developing and refining an icon image themselves before the painting process begins.

In this one day enrichment workshop,  Alla Kireyeva will teach us the basics of using preparatory line drawings to design an icon.   Using an original icon of Saint Barbara that she has written, Alla will explain the iconography of the image and show how she developed the “proris” or line drawing of the icon using a brush and pigments.  She will then explain how such line drawings can be used as preparatory studies, enabling the iconographer to refine the image before committing it to the icon board.
