SAGA is planning to host occasional “enrichment workshops.”  These will be shorter workshops designed to introduce SAGA members to either a particular technique or skill or to a medium that they haven’t tried yet.  These will generally be a half day, full-day, or two day workshops.  The aim is to keep these affordable and accessible to all members of SAGA.

Saga's first "enrichment workshop" will be led by Calgary artist, Whitney McCrary.   Drawing realistic drapery forms is an essential skill for both iconographers and those painting in the classical tradition of oil painting.  Under the guidance of Whitney McCrary, we will learn to distinguish the seven basic folds of drapery and where they are most often found. Then working from life, participants will complete a drapery study in chalk and charcoal while practicing classical drawing techniques.  This workshop will be suitable to both beginners and more advanced artists and will be helpful to anyone wanting to improve their drawing skills.

WHITNEY MCCRARY received her BFA from Savannah College of Art and Design in 2005 before continuing her education at the Academy of Classical Design in North Carolina. The academy is an intensive drawing, painting, and mural program modeled after 19th century French Academies and influenced by Renaissance humanist philosophy. She later became an instructor at the academy, while also spending time studying in Paris as an artist’s assistant, and studying with classically trained artists across the United States. Her work is inspired by the quality and ideals of past masters, historical methods and materials, with an emphasis on aesthetics and imagination.
