The Theology and Practice of Praying with Icons

Fr. Bo will be giving a talk on the theology of icons and your role in personal prayer and devotion. The talk will be given at Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Ukrainian Catholic Church which is known for its traditional Eastern style iconography throughout the whole church building. You will certainly want to hear this talk within this unique architectural ambience.
Fr. Bo will be moving to Edmonton to take up a new parish assignment. Fr. Bo has been a founding member of SAGA and supported our work in many ways. This will be his final public event with SAGA in Calgary. He hopes to continue to continue to contribute to SAGA and help to enhance our presence in the Edmonton area.

The Renewal of Sacred Architecture

SAGA is pleased to host Dr. Ryan Topping, Academic Dean and Professor of Theology at Newman Theological College for a special illustrated lecture on the renewal of sacred architecture. Dr. Topping will talk about the principles that have shaped the Catholic tradition of sacred architecture. In particular, he will address the principles that may shape the renewal of sacred architecture today and some of the challenges that face us today.
Speakers Bio: A native of Saskatoon, Canada, Dr. Topping earned an MA in Philosophy from the University of Manitoba as well as an M.Phil. and a Doctorate in Theology from the University of Oxford. He held the Pope John XXIII Chair of Studies in Catholic Theology at St. Thomas University in Canada, and also served as Fellow at Thomas More College of the Liberal Arts in New Hampshire before assuming the position of Academic Dean and Professor of Theology at Newman Theological College in Edmonton, Alberta in 2018.
Dr. Topping has published on a variety of Catholic themes and figures, from St. Augustine, to Dante, to G.K. Chesterton in academic and popular journals. He has published several books on Catholic culture and education, including Rebuilding Catholic Culture: How the Catechism Can Shape our Common Life (Sophia Institute, 2012), The Elements of Rhetoric (Angelico Press, 2016) and Renewing the Mind: A Reader in the Philosophy of Catholic Education (Catholic University of America Press, 2015).
